Character Information[ | ]

Hopper is a playable commander in Tooth and Tail, representing the Commonfolk, a faction which had sprung about in resistance to the "civilized" ways. The Common Folk are symbolic of a young Democratic state with elements of anarchy due to its lack of maturity. Her team color is red. Hopper, due to her democratic ideals, advocates a vote-based system for deciding who gets to be the food. With this said, however, things usually devolve to mob rule chaos which ultimately decides what happens. The Commonfolk are, to the other factions at least, the clown of the show, their inability to stabilize themselves and maintain order is what makes them such a fragile and vulnerable state. Hopper, herself, is missing an arm, having given it up to feed the people. Many of the Commonfolk appreciate Hopper's selfless nature, and respect her willingness to fight on their behalf.

Story[ | ]

Hopper first appears overlooking the desert reluctantly fending off an attack from the Civilized. A Chameleon notices the difficulty of the battle ahead and the Longcoats losing numbers fast due to Bellafide's shaky leadership, so he sneaks into the Longcoat's base to confront Bellafide with a deal. He helps Hopper fend off the Civilized and Hopper will supply loyal men to fight along side him. Bellafide reluctantly agrees and finds Hopper standing idly who initially is skeptical, but quickly agrees to join forces with Bellafide. After the two take down the Civilized and KSR units, Hopper returns to the skirts with good news about the Longcoats joining them. Her celebration is short lived as a lizard complains that the KSR hauled off his brother with intent to kill him and the Matriark wants him to be rescued. Hopper agrees with the Matriark without hesitation and goes to break the commonfolk out of prison. Once she gets back, she sees the Longcoats have settled into the Skirts and are opening up shops all over, much to her annoyance at thier pricing, but is happy to have allies give the Commonfolk something to look forward to. She hears that Bellafide is planning an attack that's heavily fortified by KSR and Civilized units and rushes out to aid him for fear he'll be killed. As she returns, she sees a Snake giving a sermon to several Commonfolk attempting to convert them to Civilized so they can be used as sacrifices. Hopper sees through this rouse and heads to the sands to help save the Nomads from being convinced to leave the Skirts, unaware of their fate if they do. When Hopper returns, she hears about a group of Longcoats in Scrapetown who are selling meat and a KSR patrol in the area. Seeing an opportunity, she opts to go there, stating that those Longcoats aren't part of Bellafide's army and thus are fair game for theft. She steals their meat and takes down the KSR to control Scrapetown. While occupying Scrapetown, the Matriark commends Hopper on the respect the Commonfolk gave her, and expresses concern that Hopper's growth will lead to her overtaking the Matriark. Hopper assures her that she has no intention of dethroning the Matriark and fully is devoted to her, nervously as being a mouse, it's implied the Matriark would likely have eaten her if she felt Hopper was trying to usurp her. However The Matriark changes the subject to the affairs in Scrapetown, where she tells Hopper to buy the Longcoat's loyalty (and meat) with protection by stopping the CIvilized from attacking the town. Hopper agrees and does so. As she returns, Kasha, a friend of hers who was resting in the Skirts wakes up from her sleep. Hopper checks up on her and expresses how she's happy Kasha is well before immediately dragging her into a plan to steal meat from the KSR's reserves in the Kitchens, thier home base. Kasha has concerns about this plan, but seeing how she likes the Skirts and owes a debt to Hopper, reluctantly agrees to help her steal the meat (she later explains her frustration when she points out the meat stolen not only caused the KSR unnecessary grief, but it also wasn't enough for them to stop stealing). This is the last mission where Hopper is controlled, but the story immediately continues with the Quartermaster griping about how the Commonfolk just stole some of thier meat reserves and how little the condone theft at times like this. Over time though, rumors are spreading that the Commonfolk and Longcoats are no longer seeing eye to eye and Quartermaster opts to take advantage of their broken resolve to stop the war by having them take each other out. Kasha however has a different plan as she tells the Quartermaster about Snikaree where the three groups could live in peace without the Civilized and after a final skirmish, it's implied Hopper agreed to the terms and let the Commonfolk resettle the land and the KSR run it. At the end, Hopper is tricked by the pigs to believe that the Commonfolk are the only group that stand a chance to take over if they head to the Noe for a final battle. Though Archimedes is controlled by default, destroying Hopper's Gristmill or having Hopper destroy a Gristmill will allow you to play as Hopper, and if she is the last one standing, she can optionally get slaughtered by the pigs staging a revolution of thier own, or defeat them all and quietly end up the winner for the Commonfolk. In VS mode, she expresses disdain for Bellafide where she reminds him they are not allies and wants to see if his battle prowess is as good as rumors have it. So despite her trust in him during the story, she seems to heavily distrust him in post.

Trivia[ | ]

  • During the development process, this character was referred to as "Marrow"
  • One prisoner claims that Hopper had removed her own arm, not for the benefit of the people, but to feed herself
    • Though he may have been insulting her as she retorts the same about Quartermaster's eye. A Commonfolk member similarly thanks her for letting her arm become meat to feed them, but the way he speaks implies he may be insane.
    • There is an image in the gallery showing how she lost her arm. She did indeed cut it off right at the table to feed the people (much to their surprise and fear). It's very likely this sacrifice is what elevated her to the unquestionable heroic status of the Commonfolk, despite being a very temporary solution. Despite this, she seems to make light of it as when returning to base after defeat, she states "Almost lost my other arm" in a "don't worry about me" kind of tone. She really puts others before herself.
  • Although Hopper is for the Commonfolk she reports to the mob-boss-like Matriark, and follows her orders
    • She also holds the former Tsarina in very high regard, openly lamenting how much she misses her.
    • Hopper similarly is an extreme idealist/optimist, as she proudly states that everyone will simply vote on who will be eaten and all will be fine. She is acutely unaware that an angry mob would likely spawn from enough people disagreeing with the vote.
      • Ironically, despite wanting democracy, she still holds the Matriark's word as final, something the Matriark hints may be an issue to a nervous and short sighted Hopper.
  • Despite Hopper's typically caring nature she seems to care little for Pigs, though she does not openly mock them like some of the other commanders, but she gets offended when one tells her the Longcoats will betray her, but not particularly because a pig said it as much as she just trusts the Longcoats too much.
    • Alas, given the Longcoats do see the Commonfolk as lazy and poor, Hopper slowly catches on that they will likely be sacrificed under Bellafide's rule, slowly creating a rift between the Longcoats and Hopper despite their alliance. Hopper also doesn't like how the Longcoats are selling things at high prices in the Skirts and complaining about the Commonfolk's habit of stealing to survive, both of which potentially attracting the KSR's attention.
    • Hopper has no qualms about stealing from Longcoats as long as they're not under Bellafide. This may be the action that caused Bellafide to stop trusting her after having used her to rebuild his army, assuming he knew about it. She also later bribes the Longcoats with protection for food under the Matriark's orders.
  • Hopper and the KSR appear to have the same goals of wanting equality for everyone. However both have opposite ideas of how to obtain it. Quartermaster is convinced of this by Kasha and later on, she apparently negotiated with Hopper to set up a new nation in Snikaree where Commonfolk work, KSR guards, and Longcoats trade, only for everyone to return everyone to the status quo.
  • Hopper's in-game dialogue suggests that there are varying dialects within the game
    • In early builds, she spoke clean english, but was lately given a thick country/cockney accent to reflect her poorer status.
    • Her voiced lines reflect this change, as she spoke more calmly in early builds, but when given the accent, her voice has a hint of a drawl despite being in a made up language. Her use of the word "Sniks" for Snacks reinforces this.
    • She does speak a bit of English when she screams "AHHH! KILL EM!" as one of her vocalized attack lines, but the accent of the voice implies it's engrish.
  • Hopper is voiced by Caitlyn Bairstow
  • Hopper's missing arm changes sides depending on the art.
    • Hopper appears more serious in her older art where she's drawn with both arms. In later art and once she's given the accent, her personality is changed to be more radical and cautious in battle.
    • It's unclear if her nature reflects she's older or younger. Everyone respects her as if she's kind of a den mother to the Commonfolk, but her naive and inexperienced nature as well as short sighted outlook on life implies she might be younger. She may have been designed to be an older motherly type initially, but changed to a young radical later on so she's not as sympathetic, given the nature of the plot.
    • Despite being the second commander, she is most often portrayed in art and media and appears to be the mascot of the game.
